What to Expect with Ear SurgeryAn otoplasty is the surgical procedure of changing the size, shape or prominence of the ears. This procedure is most commonly performed to “pin” prominent ears back closer to the head. An otoplasty is common for adults as well as children as young as 6 although Dr. Newall will generally have children wait to the age of 14 before having surgery. In general the ears are near full growth by the age of 4. This surgery can be done under general anesthesia or, in some cases, local anesthesia. Dr. Newall will make an incision behind the ear exposing the cartilage. After gaining access to the ear cartilage he will sculpt is as needed and use sutures to hold the final shape. Dr. Newall will hide the incision in the natural crease behind the ear. The resulting scar is usually imperceptible after full healing. An otoplasty is a common procedure with minimal risks and downtime but like any surgery your choice of surgeon is paramount to the quality of your results.
