What to Expect with Gynecomastia Surgery

Many men suffer from the condition of enlarged or overdeveloped breasts.  This condition may be caused by a number of factors including heredity, hormones, disease, drugs and/or prescription medications.  Gynecomastia can be very damaging to the male self image and self confidence.  Depression, lack of physical activities and intimacy issues are all associated with the condition.  For Dr. Newall it is extremely rewarding to see patients feel good about their bodies and this is particularly true with gynecomastia patients.

Treatment of gynecomastia is dependent on the extent of the condition.  If the condition is due mainly to an excess of fatty tissue liposuction alone may provide the desired look.  If the condition is a result of both fatty tissue and glandular material Dr. Newall may us the “Pull Through” technique in combination with liposuction.  This technique requires a small incision in which Dr. Newall can remove glandular tissue in small strips.  This newer technique provides great results with a minimal scar that can be hidden in the areolar line of the nipple.  In more extensive cases Dr. Newall may decide the “Excision Technique” is best for you.  This technique is recommended when excess skin must be removed in addition to fatty and glandular tissues.  Prior to going forward with any surgery Dr. Newall will discuss the pros and cons of all options with you and together you both will determine the best option to achieve your desired look.

Steroids and Gynecomastia:

It is well known that steroids commonly have the side effect of enlarging the male breasts.  Athletes are often under a great deal of pressure to perform well.  Turning to steroids may not only increase your risk of developing gynecomastia but acne and behavioral changes are common as well.

Pectoral Etching:

Another option for men with mild gynecomastia would be Pectoral Etching.  This is the liposuction technique of removing fat along the lower and outer edges of the chest to define the pectoral muscle.  A small amount of fat is left creating the appearance of large masculine pectoral muscles.  In years past a silicone implant might have been used to produce similar results that Dr. Newall can achieve through pectoral etching.
