What to Expect with Rhinoplasty Surgery

A rhinoplasty is the surgical treatment to improve the appearance of the nose.  A rhinoplasty is commonly done to balance the size and shape of the nose with the rest of the facial features.  Occasionally rhinoplasties are performed to correct impaired breathing or deformations due to trauma or genetics.

Rhinoplasties are performed on adults of all ages but are one of a few cosmetic procedures that are commonly performed on adolescence as young as 13.  This is because facial growth is usually complete by the age of 13.

There are 2 common techniques.  Dr. Newall usually performs the closed technique where the incisions are hidden inside the nose.  This technique is used when possible because there are no external incisions and therefore no visible scarring.  The open technique is less common and requires an incision across the narrow strip of skin separating the nostrils.

Regardless of which technique is used Dr. Newall uses the opening to gain access to the underlying nasal structures: bone, cartilage and soft tissue.  Reshaping the nose is achieved thru the manipulation of these structures.  Once the procedure is over Dr. Newall will usually splint the nose and pack the nostrils with sterile gauze to lend support to the nose during the first few days of healing.

Deviated Septum / Snoring / Difficulty Breathing: Snoring or other signs of nasal obstructions may indicate an overly large or deviated septum (the cartilage wall separating the two sides of the nose).  Should you have either of these deformities Dr. Newall may be able to improve your breathing by performing a septoplasty in combination with your rhinoplasty.  Because a septoplasty is not considered cosmetic it may be covered by some insurances.

Rhinoplasty Surgery FAQs

Will there be a Scar?

There are two techniques. Open and closed techniques. Dr. Newall usually performs the closed technique. The open technique is less common and requires an incision across the narrow strip of skin separating the nostrils so there will be a little scar. The closed technique has the incisions inside the nostril so the scar will not be visible.
